Khaki's Story
She came out of the blue into our lives and none of us
has ever been the same! We had never had a dog - Mom
simply brought her home one day as a surprise. My
mother was concerned that Dad would be upset, so she
told him she got the puppy free and that we could
return her the next day if it didn't work out.
It was love at first sight!
We decided to name her
Khaki. She was a tiny ball of
fur with boundless energy. Her feet were the only
indication of the enormous dog she would become - they
seemed about eight sizes too big for her body, making
her adorably clumsy.
She was supposed to be mostly an outdoor dog, sleeping in our
sunroom at night. That first night she whimpered and
cried all night. She gradually got quieter and Mom
thought she was adapting to her new room. Little did
she know that we kids were sneaking downstairs and
bringing Khaki to bed with us!
She became a precious member of our family. I remember
her tail would thump loudly whenever anyone called her
name. Once when I was sick, she stayed on the couch
with me for almost a week. She loved her family, but
she was always Mom's golden "girrrrl."
She was only with us for ten short years, but she
remains in our hearts forever!
