Man’s Best Friend
By Sam Rapp
She’d been around since before I was five.
My sister had not even been alive.
She would knock me down both night and day
With her giant tail that would always sway.
As we grew up, we became friends
Sharing in enjoyment we hoped would never end.
An incredible time was had by us both
Until, we discovered that horrible growth.
She had cancer in her front left leg
It was hard for her to stand up and beg
She couldn’t run and could barely walk
So all she did was watch and talk.
We talked all day, we talked all night
We talked about how she used to bite.
The last four years of her wondrous life
She could not avoid the pain and strife.
In that last year she lost her leg
She would always whine, and bark and beg.
And then one day as if she were counting sheep
She finally got a chance to sleep.
Although she was old and very frail
She was always bold and never pale.
She brought light to the world, she would never seem
dark
I now yearn for the sound of her wonderful bark.
We were always together to the very end.
Me and my very best friend.
