Fostering with MAGRR

by Cindy S.

We bought our first Golden Retriever from a breeder 6 years ago. Payton is a wonderful boy with a ton of personality, very loyal and loving and the BEST dog we have ever had. About three years later we bought our girl. Hayley is also funny, loyal and very loving. We decided that we would never have another breed of dog. We truly love our GOLDENS!!!

In August of 2005, we read an article in the Commercial Appeal about MAGRR. It was a wonderful story about all of the great work MAGGR does for our favorite breed of dog. The article stated that MAGRR was in need of volunteers. I immediately went to the web site and filled out the application. I was certain, that we could pass out flyers, make phone calls, pick up dogs, etc. A couple of days later, I received a phone call from Phyl. She immediately asked me how I wanted to help. I told her that anything she needed me to do, I could do. BOY, WAS THAT A MISTAKE!?! Before I knew it she was talking to me about fostering and how much it would help them and that they are always in need of fosters. Of course, anyone who knows Phyl knows she can be VERY persuasive. So, here we are 15 months and 13 foster dogs later.

We love what we do. It is such a joy to bring these dogs in to our home with so many issues and watch them leave with their forever families full of confidence and joy. We have shed quite a few tears watching them leave, but we know that what we are doing is wonderful for these beautiful babies who would otherwise not have a chance.

Shaun just went to his forever home two days ago. I was sad to see him go and also a little relieved that we would get a break from juggling dogs. As I write this I am starting to wonder who our next doggie will be? Will he be house trained, leash trained, a counter surfer, a shoe stealer, an underwear stealer? Will he get along with our dogs? Will he run around the house like a maniac? Will he be sick, afraid, sad, lonely? Whatever it is we will do our best to love and nurture him. So much for our break. Phyl, who's next?
