From Memphis with Love
Maggie's Journey to a Happy Ending

Makita, our golden retriever, passed away in September at the age of 15. Even though her days of chasing squirrels and running in the yard with the kids were long gone, she still brought much happiness to our family with her delicate tail wags, and her classic “golden-smiles” all goldens seem to have! There was certainly a giant void in our family when she was gone. Occasionally we were asked if we thought we would get another dog, and our reply was always, “maybe someday.” We felt in our hearts there would never be another Makita, and our love for her was clearly still evident. She had been a member of our family for a very long time.

As the weeks passed by, we never seemed to get used to having an empty home. After Thanksgiving, my husband asked the kids and me for our Christmas lists, and he was astonished to see that each of us had written golden retriever. We were clearly ready for a new “golden-smile” to come into our family. We considered local breeders, but after talking with a close friend who shared his wonderful adoption experience that he had with a southern rescue league, we decided to do the same. We were astounded by the number of beautiful goldens in the southern part of the US that were in need of loving homes.

We expected the adoption process to take a few months, so we began our search immediately. We discovered beautiful goldens with heart-grabbing stories, were available through MAGRR. We quickly decided MAGRR was the agency we would pursue adoption with. We filled out the on-line application, and emailed Lise Kirk, the New England Representative, to ensure our application was received. Lise was exceptionally courteous, and faithfully kept in touch with us during every step of the adoption process. We were impressed with her level of commitment, and her devotion to the goldens was unmistakable. She helped make the adoption process progress more quickly than we ever expected!

We spoke with the foster families hosting the various goldens we were interested in, and they were all especially helpful, sharing important information about each dog, and answering all our questions. During one particular conversation with a foster mom, we immediately felt the golden she described was perfect for us. Her name was Maggie, and she sounded absolutely wonderful! We called Lise Kirk to inform her of our decision, and she confirmed at 6:30 a.m. the next morning that Maggie was ours! We could not wait to wake the kids and share the happy news!

One week later, Maggie arrived in the transport trailer, along with her special red blanket. We could not believe it! Both the foster family and the staff at MAGRR made sure Maggie’s special blanket arrived here with her. That alone says so much about the incredible commitment level of the foster family who took care of Maggie, and about everyone at MAGRR!

It only took Maggie all of 30 seconds to feel right at home, on our couch, when she arrived! She has made our home a very happy home again! She is a perfect match for our family! She chases tennis balls endlessly, loves car rides, and her early morning walks! She loves to cuddle, and has learned rather quickly where the dog bones are kept! She greets us every day with bounding leaps, massive tail wags, and she melts our hearts with her incredible golden-smile! We can’t imagine our life without her! She was meant for us, and Lise Kirk and everyone at MAGRR made it happen!
